Brainstorming is not just a random dumping of ideas. The most effective brainstorming methods involve a purposeful balance of free-form thinking and strategic organization.
How could brainstorming be a game-changer for your ministry or business? Here are four ways:
1. Brainstorming gets you out of your own head
We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails. Proverbs 19:21 (MSG)
Brainstorming is a creative way we can partner with God. We can empty ourselves of our own will and desires, and allow Him bring fresh, creative solutions
2. Brainstorming brings structure to your ideas
If your big vision can stand up to the scrutiny of critical thinking, you’ll know it’s one worth pursuing.
A structured approach can remove barriers and set us in a position for God to do His greatest work.
3. Brainstorming brings different viewpoints
A fun brainstorming session is the perfect way to bring in some like-minded peers and let them speak into your dreams and ideas.
By bringing in the views of others, the options become deeper and richer, with more detail and completeness.
4. Brainstorming builds teams
The most important ground rule of brainstorming is that there is no rank in the room … everyone’s opinion matters and contributes to the end result.
This environment builds trust among team members.
So now that you are intrigued by the idea of brainstorming, how do you go about doing it?
Structured brainstorming methods often yield a more realistic view of the situation, and one that lends itself to plans and solutions.
These two brainstorming methods are my favorite.
1. Sticky Note Wall
Grab some 3 x 3 square sticky notes in different colors, clear out some space on a smooth wall and start writing every idea in your head on a note. Arrange them in endless combinations until they make sense.
2. Mind-Mapping
When there are too many ideas floating around in your head, capture them using a mind map. I try to keep my mind mapping fairly simple, focused on dumping everything from my head to the paper.
ACTION
Brainstorm your way through one idea. Use either of these methods I suggested, or a different one that works for you. Snap a picture of your brainstorm. Share it on social media using the hashtag #justonesimplething and tag me @doanewthing so I can cheer you on.
