How a Go-getter Jesus Girl pumped new life in an old skill

Alyssa Avant has been working in the online space longer than many of us have owned a laptop! For more than a dozen years, Alyssa has been an author, blogger and virtual assistant. When she came to me for coaching, she was at the crossroads many online entrepreneurs find themselves. She was trading time for money and had maxed out the time she could spend working for clients. If she was going to meet her aggressive income goals for the next year, she needed a way to scale.

We tossed around several ideas. Alyssa had dabbled in training virtual assistants before, in courses and one-on-one, but it never really gave her the results she wanted. As we continued to talk, I mentioned that I have seen so many Christian writers and bloggers asking for VA recommendations in Facebook groups. Everyone needs help with their blogging and social media tasks, but it’s hard to find someone who is dependable and really knows what she’s doing. What if Alyssa created a matching service to connect VA’s with the people who needed what they offered? She could train and vet the VA’s so she knows they have strong skills and good systems. For bloggers and other business owners, she can help them figure out the best tasks to outsource and match them up with just the right person.

Alyssa got to work. She was already great at making project plans and managing her to-do list, but she joined the Move Forward Mastermind for some accountability to stay on track. She also got feedback on her ideas from the group each step of the way. After polishing up her old VA training course, Alyssa offered the Advantage Virtual Assistant Academy and then she launched the Christian Business Advantage Virtual Assistant directory and matchmaking service where she matches business owners and bloggers with a trained, vetted virtual assistant. It’s a win-win for everyone!

And a win for Alyssa as well. The extra income from the training courses and the directory allowed her to pursue a passion project …. launching a podcast for virtual assistants. And now she’s coaching experienced VA’s in how to expand their businesses into additional revenue streams, just like she has done.

I’m so proud of all that Alyssa accomplished. She was able to turn a skill and experience she already had into a scalable business that is fun and helps others reach their own goals.

How a chronic starter learned to finish

Janet had been writing for years. She had notebooks and computer files piled up with thousands and thousands of words. As an avid photographer and traveler, for every word, she had a gorgeous photograph that captured the depth of her passion for chasing after God through the hard times.

A south Louisiana native, Janet survived Hurricane Katrina, a divorce after more than 30 years of marriage, hard stuff in her family and through it all, managed to found a ministry in Honduras that elevates women out of poverty by giving them the tools and resources they need to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Sharing hope is her passion and Janet wanted to do that by sharing her words and her photographs.

Like many passionate women, Janet had a lot of ideas but struggled to stay focused and implement them. She asked me to help her develop a plan and hold her accountable to do the things she committed to do.

We started with the things you always do to grow an online presence … posting on the blog consistently, engaging on social media, creating a new subscriber opt-in to grow her email list. But it still felt like we were slogging through the muck.

Then I noticed a pattern. We left every phone call with a plan, but every time we talked, Janet had started something new! Finally (I’ll admit to a little frustration!) I said, “Janet, you have to FINISH something!”

It was like the proverbial lightbulb went off for Janet. Through some deep prayer and journaling, Janet grappled with her fear of finishing … she was scared that if she finished something and launched it into the world, the hard places she exposed would be rejected.

With this breakthrough in hand, Janet had a renewed passion and energy. The words flowed easily as she finished each project. God brought the right people at the right time … a brand and web designer, a business director, an editor, a publisher.

Now Janet is on the cusp of launching her new website with a store offering her photographs and gifts crafted by the women of Honduras and about to publish her book. And oh how glorious her finish will be!
