How to Survive Launch Season

The lull between Back-to-School and Halloween is the prime time to catch someone's attention. It is the perfect time for online marketers and educators (and their affiliates) to help address those needs. But we can navigate the season while keeping our minds and our wallets!

It’s fall, y’all!  Of course, in South Louisiana, we only know because pumpkin spice lattes and college football remind us when the thermometer still reads “summer”. And because everywhere we look online, someone is launching a course, an ebook, a bundle or some other product that is going to change our lives.

The lull between Back-to-School and Halloween is the prime time to catch someone’s attention. The shorter days mean we spend more time inside than we did during the summer.  People are looking for ways to make a few extra dollars before the holidays.  And we begin to focus on our goals and what we want to accomplish in the next year.

It is the perfect time for online marketers and educators (and their affiliates) to help address those needs.

So how do we navigate the season while keeping our minds and our wallets? (Hey, a girl’s gotta save her nickles for the pumpkin spice lattes, right?)

Know What You Need

What things are causing you the most pain? What big struggles need to be fixed to go to the next level? What tools or resources do you need to meet your goals next year?  Having a clear picture of what you need will help you avoid Shiny Object Syndrome.  If that shiny object doesn’t help in your areas of greatest need, let it pass on by.  Otherwise, the shiny object could be more of a distraction than a game-changer for you.

Take Advantage of Free Stuff

Most marketers and educators offer some free resources during their launch.  Webinars, workbooks, bonus content. Take advantage of it all.  Use the free information to fill the smaller gaps and to give you a taste of things you may need to address in the future.  The freebies also give you an opportunity to sample teaching styles and content to find the ones that really connect with you and can be the deciding factor when trying to choose between similar offerings.

Some of the freebies are just feeble attempts to get your email address.  But others offer truly valuable and helpful content.  With the upcoming launch of his Tribe Writers course, Jeff Goins is offering a cool Writer’s Roadmap and a video series.  And it’s completely free, whether you purchase the bundle or not!

Save Some Cash for Black Friday/Cyber Monday

The biggest shopping weekend of the year gets bigger online every year.  There will be great deals, packages and bonuses from most of the same people doing launches in October, especially for planners, tools like Sumo and MailerLite, and anything to do with goal setting.  So if you are on the fence about something, wait until Thanksgiving to see if you can get a better deal.

Replace FOMO with JOMO

Every Shiny Object promises to be the ONE THING that will CHANGE EVERYTHING, capitalizing on your Fear of Missing Out on a make or break deal.

But as I’ve said before, there is no ONE THING that changes everything.  Progress comes from consistent small steps over time.  Instead of making a purchase out of fear, experience JOMO – the Joy of Managing Overwhelm.

Information overload is the killer of many online dreams.  Too much to take in, too much to manage …. just too much.  Rather than grabbing every brilliant idea that comes along, draining your back account and your energy, wisely choose one or two high quality resources that address your biggest pain points and will grow with you.

So as we dive into launch season, let’s tune out the high pressure promises, and hang on to the one promise that matters … God’s promise to provide everything we need to do what he’s called us to do.

Now may the God of peace … equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him.  Hebrews 13:20 – 21a (NIV)

He’ll make it clear what you need to grow, and what is just another shiny object.

  1. Great perspective, Christa. I am serving on a few launch teams now, and I’m happy to assist other authors in their publishing efforts. It is a time commitment, but I always feel extra blessed by serving.

  3. Great advice! I love when we can find a balance between consuming and using our time well (including rest!) Whenever I find something I want to subscribe to or use I ask myself what I’m trying to fill. Sometimes I need the course and sometimes I just need to put into practice what I’ve already learned. Great tips today!
