It’s Never Too Late to Take Your First Step

No matter how long it has been since the dream first stirred in your heart, it's never too late to take the first step.  That step may look a little different than it would have last month or last year or twenty years ago.  But it's never too late. I may have a lot of good qualities, but I have to admit …. Punctuality is not one of them.  I’m always trying to cram “just one more thing” into my already packed scheduled.  As a result, I’m usually a few minutes late for everything.  I know it is rude and I don’t mean to telegraph that my time is more important than someone else’s.  I’m working on it.

However, I’m currently working for a boss who hates for people to be late for meetings.  He thinks if you are on time, you are late.  He often starts a meeting up to five minutes before the appointed time. He’s definitely got me on my toes! If he has closed the door to the meeting room, you are too late.

Aren’t you glad that God doesn’t close the door on us and tell us we are too late?

No matter how long it has been since the dream first stirred in your heart, it’s never too late to take the first step.  That step may look a little different than it would have last month or last year or twenty years ago.  But it’s never too late.

It’s not too late because of your age.

I hear this one a lot.  Online ministry, all that techie stuff, is a young woman’s world.  Maybe it is a little easier for a trendy millennial who has had a smartphone in her hand as long as she can remember.  That doesn’t mean you can’t learn no matter what your age.

I’ve worked in online ministry with women in their 70’s!  Their wisdom and their availability is a blessing to the younger women around them. In fact, Paul tells us in the book of Titus that the older women should teach the younger women.  So your first step can come at any age.

It’s not too late because someone else already did it.

Have you looked around and seen other people doing exactly what you have in your mind to do?  Do you compare yourself to them and think you could never do it like they do?

Well, guess what?  You can’t do it like they do. And that’s a great thing! Your idea may be the same, but they way you walk it out will be different.

Where I live, there is a church on every corner.  There are several that are the same denomination as my church.  They teach from the same Bible, so the sermon topics and Bible Study lessons are pretty much the same.  They’ve got the same idea.

I go to my church because my pastor’s style of preaching suits me.  My friends and family are there.  I fit in.  I feel valued and useful.  I’m learning and growing.

That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with those other churches I pass on the way every Sunday morning.  People are learning and growing there, too.

The same will be true for your ministry.  Even if someone else is already doing the same thing, yours will have your unique stamp on it.  You will draw your audience when your style suits them and they feel valued by you.  That’s why it is so important as a writer to find your own voice.  You can only fake someone else’s for so long.

Take the first step to being gloriously you.

It’s not too late because you are out of time.

Some of our dreams and goals do have time limits on them.  You want to finish a book proposal before that writing conference.  Or lose weight before your daughter’s wedding.  But you (I) procrastinated and it doesn’t seem like there is time to get it done, so why even take the first step at all?

Why?  Because it is never too late to be obedient.  If it’s something God called you to do, taking any steps towards it is better than taking no steps.  You may not make it to the goal in time, but you will learn something in the process.  God never wastes that obedient first step.

What first step have you been putting off because you think it is too late?
