A Prayer for Your Plan

Offer this prayer for your plan and allow God to bless or change it.

Offer this prayer for your plan and allow God to bless or change it.To plan or not to plan?  That is the question we struggle with as Christians.

The same Bible that says “A wise man thinks ahead” also says “Live one day at a time.”  No wonder we are sometimes confused.  Which are we supposed to do?

The simple answer is “Both.”

James gives us a little bit of direction:

Look here, you people who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to such and such a town, stay there a year, and open up a profitable business.’ How do you know what is going to happen tomorrow? For the length of your lives is as uncertain as the morning fog—now you see it; soon it is gone. What you ought to say is, ‘If the Lord wants us to, we shall live and do this or that.’ Otherwise you will be bragging about your own plans, and such self-confidence never pleases God.” James 4:13-16 (TLB)

Think ahead and plan our days. Then live each of those days one at a time.  And change the plans if the Lord wants us to.

That last part can be hard for us go-getter Jesus girls.  We set our plans and want to check off the boxes.  If the Lord wants to change them, we may resist or simply not recognize his movement because we are head down and so focused on our plans.

Many of us spend time at the end of the week making our plans for the next week.  Would things be different if we offered our plans to the Lord with this simple prayer?

A Prayer For Your Plans

Lord, thank you for another week to serve you and be your hands and feet.

I’ve made my plans for this week and now I lay them at your feet because you know best.

If these are the things you want me to do, I pray that you’ll give me the energy, focus and discipline to get them done.  I’ll trust you for the outcomes.

If you have other plans for me, change them. Rearrange them.  Completely blow them up. I put my confidence in you. Your will, not mine.

Amen.

How would this prayer change your perspective on your plans?  What would your prayer be?

  1. I love your prayer! I changed my perspective on my planning ways a year or so ago. I stopped viewing interruptions as a bad thing and began to view them as a God thing. I went from feeing frustrated to feeling intentional over addressing what God sent my way. Thanks for your refreshing insight.

  2. Dear Christa, a week ago I thought I was retiring permanently from education. Less than an hour ago, I received a phone call and offer for my “perfect” job. Then I checked my email. I’m so thankful you were there, and that you responded to the Lord’s prompting to share about planning. Blessings on your plans and the intersection where they meet with the Lord’s.
